A Biblical Church Model

The church must recognize that restored relationship (the Two Commandments) is the whole purpose of God, and that it manifests in godly relational government. The family is the best model. All institutions will better serve when they adopt a relational model, rather than the typical institutional one. This was a principal difference in my schools.

I view the NT church model as like a Cambridge or Oxford college. Collegiate. Elders are mature, accomplished Christians who teach students. Professors. This is relational business.

As an educational institution, corporate worship serves largely to educate homes into godly practice. Largely disciplinary—practice under the needed level of government. Maturity in the faith is the goal, with a church of doctors. As with college, some remain as church teachers while others move out into life ministry according to gifting and purpose. Sense of divine purpose is another element largely missing in the mainstream.

I would add, however add that God provides corrective Law when relationship fails. The Law is for the lawless. It is judicial and corrective. Thus, church orders ought perhaps primarily provide for judicial a due process. In this same sense, legislatures do not provide fundamental law, but do provide specific, agreed-upon rules of covenantal association.

Somehow, and truly by His Spirit, God expects us to accept this tension between relationship and institution. Normally relationship serves. External Law and structures serve when things go wrong.
