Care of the Aged

We live in a secular society largely created by Christians who have abandoned the public sphere en masse. Those politically involved tend not to act on thoroughly Biblical grounds. How can we have respect for elders when mutual respect has largely disappeared? It appears a focus on personal piety without an expanding expression has taken over our ethos leading to selfishness. The answer of course is the body of Christ and its formal expression in the local congregation taking social responsibility seriously. Critical to this is a revived understanding that God requires both personal piety AND justice to neighbors. The primary Hebrew and Greek words in Scripture, variously translated either righteousness OR justice, always mean BOTH. That is, God requires both an internal quality of character AND its appropriate outward expression: Love your neighbor as yourself. This includes a broad spectrum of underclass—the poor, widow, orphan and prisoner, as well as the aged. This is not the government’s job.
